On 4 September 2026, the University of Hong Kong hosted a symposium, titled “Shaping the Common Law”, celebrating the contributions of the Hon Mr Justice Ribeiro, Permanent Judge of the Court of Final Appeal (“CFA”), to the development of the common law. The symposium was organised by the Hon Mr Justice Eugene Fung, a former member of Temple Chambers, and Professor Lusina Ho of the University of Hong Kong.

A former member and Head of Temple Chambers before joining the Judiciary, Mr Justice Ribeiro’s judgments have played a significant role in shaping Hong Kong’s common law in almost all areas, and have been widely cited in other common law jurisdictions. Having been a Permanent Judge of the CFA since 2000, Mr Justice Ribeiro is the longest-serving Permanent Judge in the CFA’s history, and among the longest-serving members of any final appellate court in the common law world today.

The symposium brought together all three Chief Justices since the Handover: the Hon Andrew Li, 

 (now an arbitrator member of Chambers), and the Hon Chief Justice Andrew Cheung, alongside leading academics, practitioners and senior judges from across the common law world.

Former and current members of Temple Chambers contributed papers on various areas of the law which have benefited from the judgments of Mr Justice Ribeiro, and which will be published by Hart Publishing: the Hon Geoffrey Ma and the Hon Mr Justice Joseph Fok PJ on constitutional law; the Hon Mr Justice Godfrey Lam JA on company and insolvency law; 

 (together with David Goldberg KC) on tax.
