 was recently invited to lead a session at the Hong Kong Common Law & Dispute Resolution Practical Training Course in Xi’an – a leading city in the “One Belt, One Road” initiative.

Co-organised by the Hong Kong International Legal Talents Training Academy and Shannxi Province Lawyers Association and bringing together 80 legal professionals from across Mainland China, the course introduced practical and operational aspects of the Hong Kong common law system and international arbitration.

During his presentation, Jonathan discussed the rules of evidence in Hong Kong and common law advocacy skills, and delivered an interactive demonstration with the audience on examination-in-chief and cross-examination of witnesses.

Bank of Qingdao (BOQ) v OOO Securities (HK) Group Ltd (OOO)

 [2025] HKCFI 2223, BOQ and OOO entered into an Investment Management Agreement for OOO to manage BOQ’s investment portfolio. BOQ claimed that OOO made unauthorised investments and terminated the agreement. OOO disputed BOQ’s claims and counterclaimed for wrongful termination. The claims involved sums in excess of US$350 million.

In early 2024, Master To made an “unless order” requiring all “intended” interlocutory applications to be made before 2 July 2024. BOQ applied for specific discovery before the deadline, and applied to amend its statement of claim after the deadline. BOQ’s amendment application was granted by Master Chow. OOO appealed.
